Why War against China will not work for the Philippines

The recent turn of events has unfolded when President Rodrigo Duterte announced that China will welcome a warm relationship with the Philippines. But, if the country forces the issue on the disputed islands in the West Philippine Sea, China will be forced to go to war.

Why can't we win against China?

It is obvious that we will not win against China. But since the anti-Duterte forces have been busy criticizing the actions of the President-- even calling him a dog for trying to be friendly with the Chinese-- they can't seem to comprehend that the odds are not in our favor when it comes to being hard-headed against China. The Philippines lacks the military personnel and equipment, even decades of war against Terrorists in Mindanao has never been fruitful.

The US-Philippines Mutual Defense Treaty

The ignorant Filipinos want to put the MDT to the test. Washington has made 'vague assurances' to the Philippines in case tension rise up. According to the International Crisis Group (ICG), "Furthermore, the US has not confirmed whether the scope of the treaty covers contested territories in the South China Sea," It added that MDT predates the Philippines' territorial claims in the West Philippine Sea, resulting in uncertainties how the US will interpret its application to disputed territories in the event of a conflict.

The Mutual Defense Treaty obviously will not cover the island dispute. Filipinos keep forcing about the Treaty when Washington itself is not even sure it will respond if tensions rise. Let us also remember that there are no longer US bases here in the Philippines since 1991.

Duterte's strategy is long-term

Duterte has shifted the balance of power in the Pacific by turning to China for investments. The Philippines is one of the fastest growing economies in Asia. Getting investments from the powerhouse and be included in the One Belt, One road project is a very good timing for the Philippines. Once the economy gets stronger, the Philippines will be able to afford military equipment that can par with powerful countries in the world. So far, going to war with China is not the best option yet.

Duterte's shift to China is not just practical, but a work of Genius.
