DOTr's improvisation of public transport |
The transport group strike is still on-going, resulting in a suspension of government works and classes nationwide. But, many of the transport groups protesting nationwide are brainwashing the Filipino people of their selfish agendas.
Why should we scrap Jeepneys?
There are lots of sentiments from Filipinos when it comes to this one. Removing jeepneys from roads will result into thousands of jeepney drivers becoming jobless which isn't the case because the government will let the drivers buy the modern PUVs with a very low interest rate. Also, Jeepneys are considered as a relic and is considered an identity of what makes us Filipinos. Really?
The Jeep is a world war relic, left-over by American soldiers after the war. Filipinos were able to convert it into one of the well-known mass transportation systems in the world. But there is one downside, IT IS TOO OLD.
Electric cars have been a trend in other countries, aside from being eco-friendly, electric cars don't cost you gasoline, and charging them is cheaper compared to diesel oil.
Jeepneys in the Philippines are not just old, but are very unsafe due to a very open type of transportation, which resulted into thousands of reported crimes each day from robbery to murder.
Jeepneys also emit too much carbon. New car engines emit less Co2 so it is one of the many reasons we should just let Jeepneys become history. There are lots of undisciplined jeepney drivers that have caused too much inconvenience and traffic.
It's really a no-brainer on why Jeepneys deserve a phase-out.
Out with the old, in with the new
The modern PUVs proposed by the Department of Transportation are promising. It is locally-manufactured so it will strengthen the labor force in the country. Compare to Jeeps, modern PUV buses have better seats and covered windows that will lessen robbery crimes in highways. It costs much less fuel and is more eco-friendly with its Euro 4 standards-compliant which has 10 times cleaner emissions than old engines.
The DOTr also promised that the fare for the modern PUV will not reach 20 pesos because it has 22 seats, costs much less fuel and has zero to low maintenance costs due to the fact that it is brand new.
We need to change mass transportation, change will come to the people who embrace it. Piston, a transport group that lead the protest, are selfish people who want to individualize the mass transport. Filipinos deserve better, PUVs need to be owned by the government or a corporation that can suite our needs. It's time to modernize our roads with modern vehicles. It's either you go in our out. There is no in-between.
